Application and Design of Brine-Based Drilling Fluids

Combinations of Drilling Fluids :

The oil drilling industry has significantly surged and with it, the demand of oilfield chemicals. These chemicals are components comprise of various combinations of drilling fluids that are applied in oil and gas extraction processes. These chemicals are useful to uplift the quality of drilling manufacturing units, giving a high performance in the drilling practices. Oil drilling chemicals are components which are a combination of various bromide and chloride chemicals that are applied in the oil and natural gas drilling and extraction activities. Calcium Bromide (CAS No. 7789-41-5), CaBr2 is one of the most popular oil well chemical which, due to its desirable characteristics is used widespread.

Calcium Bromide also forms as an excellent clear brine fluid. It is used as single-salt brine or multi-salt brine which can be characteristic brine which is a mixture of two or more oilfield chemicals.

Calcium Bromide (CAS No. 7789-41-5), as a Single Salt Brine :

Oilfield chemicals.
Calcium bromide (CaBr2) is a single salt clear brine fluid of 14.2 lbs/gal density. It is a stable formation which is widely used in oil exploration fields. CaBr2 comes in two forms: Powdered (dry) and liquid forms. In its liquid form, it serves as an Excellent Oilfield Chemicals that helps balance the unstable strata while drilling oil & gas and prevents intrusion of water that may be encountered while drilling on uneven surfaces. In its powder form, it dissolves in water & other brines, and yields completion workover and packer fluids of densities upto 2.3 gm/ml (19.2 lb/gal).

Calcium Bromide (CAS No. 7789-41-5), as Multi Salt Brine:

CaBr2 when blended with other bromides and chlorides, results in low-cost, high density clear brines which can be used as excellent oilfield chemicals like drilling, completion, and packer fluids. These fluids prove to be very efficient and cost low. The blends formed by combining calcium bromide with other fluids are as follows:

1. Zinc Bromide/Calcium Bromide blend: It is used as a clear-brine workaround and completion fluid. This multi-salt brine, jointly known as zince bromide, requires high-density fluids and can be blended with lower density brines and can be formulated with various crystallization points. It is a clear, solids free brine fluid of 19.2 lbs/gal density, with 53-58% ZnBr2 and 20.0-23.0% CaBr2. It can be blended with other solutions containing bromides and chlorides.

2. Calcium Bromide (CaBr2) /Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) blend: It is a two-salt brine system ranging from 11.7 to 15.1 lb/gal densities. This density range is obtained by blending 11.6 lb/gal CaCl2 with 14.3 lb/gal CaBr2. This multi-salt brine is the most economically available clear brine solution.

3. Zinc Bromide/Calcium Bromide Blend: A clear brine fluid, zinc bromide/calcium bromide (ZnBr2/CaBr2) blend is a blend with density varying from 19.2 lb/gal to 20.5 lb/gal. A zinc bromide/calcium bromide blend can also be used as a spike fluid in clear brine fluids.

Thus, High Quality Calcium Bromide (CAS No. 7789-41-5), is a widely used amongst the oilfield chemicals.
